Sooo … Muscles? & Mascara?

I am a gym rat. I work out at least 5 days a week. If I could get paid to workout, I would do it all day long. And while I am a certified Les Mills BodyPump instructor, I certainly don’t get paid what I get at my “real” job.  I would have to teach 13 classes a day to make what I make at my adult job.  I don’t even think my gym is open enough hours to allow me to teach that many classes a day. Regardless, fitness is a passion of mine. So when I was trying to decide on a name for my Younique business, I wanted to incorporate my passions together.

And Muscles & Mascara was born.

My life consists of my family, my gym, and my business. I’m pretty simple. Everything else is just white noise.

How to:

  1. Apply a generous amount of the body bronzer to one part of the body at a time
  2. Blend until the sheer bronze color is even
  3. Finish by washing your hands

What’s your color?

  • Sunset: fair skin

What To Do When Your Facebook Feed Is Full of Friends Selling Stuff

This was posted on Facebook and I thought to myself – “hey I just wrote a blog about this exact thing.” Read below:

There has been blog post, after article, after video, after rant about how Facebook and other social media are full of friends “just selling stuff.” Yeah, I know. Mine is, too. I have friends who sell essential oils, make-up, jewelry, clothes, weight loss systems, vitamins, nail polish, mascara and skin care. Crazy, right?
I mean, Facebook used to be all about people posting pictures of their food and crazy cat videos. No one complained about THAT. Oh and there are the political rants. Everyone LOVES those. The conspiracy theories and the inspirational quotes straight from a 365 Days of Inspirational Quotes desktop calendar…. (rolls eyes). What about the endless pictures of your best friend’s kids at their dance recital? Cannot wait for those to come across your feed, am I right?

Well, I have a solution for dealing with all those pesky direct sales people. In fact, I have a few suggestions….

1) You don’t have to read everything that your friends publish. Think of it like a newspaper or magazine. Do you read every.single.line.of.every.single.article and ad in the paper? No, you pick and choose what you want to read. You skim some articles and completely skip others. Think of Facebook and social media the same way. You are only seeing a very small percentage of what your friends are posting on Facebook due to the algorithm in how posts show up in newsfeeds, by the way. You can go directly to their pages to read, skim and skip if you are not getting enough news on your feed 😉

2) Here’s a novel idea… support your friends. Are they truly friends or just Facebook “friends”? If they are truly friends, support them. Help them. That does not mean you need to buy all the products, but perhaps you are using another brand of a similar product and would be open to trying what your friend is offering instead? Who knows, maybe you will even like the products better than what you are using!? I mean, we’d ALL rather the profits go to our FRIENDS than to some behemoth corporation so they can pay million dollar bonuses to the C-suite, right? Of course we would. Think about that the next time you buy from a retail store instead of from a friend. (I am not guilt-tripping anyone, but think about it… if you feel guilty about this, then you know what is right.)

3) If you really have no need for the products or services your friends are representing, who in your network does? This is another way to help your friends build their businesses. Referrals are the life source of any business! Opening your heart and mind are sometimes even better than opening your wallet, and there are surely people you know who are looking for something that one of your friends has to offer. (That has been a huge revelation for me – NEVER assume someone is not interested!) It’s a way to help several people at the same time by connecting those who have a need with those who have a solution. It’s a GOOD thing. It’s the way the world works. The flip side is that you are helping NO ONE if you shut down friends (or anyone else you have reason to trust) just because you succumb to the stigma of a direct sales model.

4) Pay just a little more attention to those posts. Maybe… just MAYBE… you will realize that this is a new wave that is growing, not going away.

It’s called Social Commerce.

If you have any qualms about social commerce, I suggest you heed the research:

👉🏼Customers are 4x more likely to buy when referred by a friend.

👉🏼90% of consumers trust peer recommendations, while only 33% trust ads.

👉🏼74% of consumers rely on social media to inform their purchasing decisions.

👉🏼Eighty-four percent of millennial shoppers say consumer-written content on brand sites influences what they buy.

Your friends are paying attention to what you like and buy. You pay attention to what your friends like and buy. Trusted recommendations are an integral part of social currency! I’d MUCH rather get a recommendation about my skin care from a friend who I know uses it than from Retail Rita at the department store – who I don’t even know and have NO reason to trust! Why on Earth would you trust Retail Rita more than a friend you know? Lots of people just have it backwards…

Network marketing not only builds on this very real trend of social commerce, it also provides a multitude of people with an income stream with flexibility. If my friends and contacts can create an income stream that supports their financial needs and lets them manage their own schedules, I am THRILLED for them. I support them! I am a CHEERLEADER!

5) If you have read this up to this point, you may be feeling a little old school, definitely a little judgy-wudgy, and maybe a little FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). If you are not feeling any or all of those, go back and re-read. You owe it to your friend. No, you owe it to YOURSELF. Are you possibly letting surly stigma get in the way of your next BIG opportunity?

Now, think about this:

Perhaps the reason this network marketing thing is all over your Facebook feed is because it WORKS. Social commerce is big, real business and – WHOA! – your friends are catching the wave and YOU ARE NOT. While they are building their side gig into serious income in yoga pants in the garden, you are in your car, commuting three hours round-trip to a job you hate that only gives you a raise once a year.

You can either watch the parade pass you by, or join us. We won’t judge ☺️

Why are Younique presenters pushy?

You can do a simple Internet search and see one of the complaints about Younique and its presenters is that we are pushy, spammy, and just down right annoying. And trust me – I get that. If 10% of your Facebook friends are Younique presenters, chances are you will be inundated with some of the same posts and pictures at the same time.

It boils down to one simple thing really. We want to share what we love. And we want our friends to know what we love. Think back to the last time you raved about something – a restaurant, a brand, a store, whatever. Did you let your friends know about your experience?  I am famous for sharing everything. If you look through my Facebook timeline, yes, I talk about Younique, but I also mention my love for LuLaRoe (no, I’m not a consultant) or my daily need for Shakeology (again, not a Beachbody coach). I rave about my gym (Onelife Fitness) and attending BodyPump (ok, yes I’m a certified instructor but I don’t get paid based on the number of people who attend my classes).

My point, instead of rolling your eyes and saying “gee, not another post about that dang-gone mascara,” maybe stop and think about why your friend is posting about it.  She could just be sharing because she really likes it.  If a good number of your friends are Younique presenters, maybe they may be on to something.  I’m not saying join the brand-wagon because everyone else has. I’m just saying don’t knock it till you try it. I tell my kids that all the time. If I give them something out of the ordinary to eat, they are quick to balk and say “I don’t like this.”  My first question is “but have you tried it before?”  And usually the answer is no. It just may not be presented in a way appealing to them, and if I can convince them to try it, they may find out they actually like it.

What if you keep getting added to Younique groups?  I don’t personally recommend that presenters or hostesses arbitrarily add everyone to their Younique parties. I will admit that I did when I first started as a presenter and I wish I hadn’t. I wish I had contacted each person personally and talked to her about it before I went in and added everyone I knew to my group. But that’s a lesson learned in my book.   We just get so excited and want to share with everyone we know!  And yes, I too get added to many different groups and it is really easy to manage that. With a click of a button, you can turn off notifications:

To edit your notification settings for a group, go to a group and click Notifications in the top-right corner. From here, you can select: All Posts: You’ll get notifications any time members post in the group.

Or if you want to just leave the group, follow these steps:

To leave a group, go to the group, click Joined at the top and then select Leave Group. When you leave a group: Members won’t be notified. You’re removed from the member list and the group will be removed from your list of groups.

Most Younique presenters don’t want to annoy our friends. We are just sharing what we love and there’s no better platform to share than on social media. Let’s not forget that Younique is completely 100% online-based. We do not require home parties or a monthly inventory quota.  We are truly a home-based, work your own hours business.  But if you are a true friend of someone who works in network marketing, think about this: are you being a supportive friend?  I understand being bombarded with constant posts of “buy this,” but aren’t we as a society already targets of marketing? Commercials on tv or radio, ads in magazines, ads on websites, billboards. It’s everywhere we look. It is just the way our society works.  So instead of padding the pockets of CEOs already making millions of dollars, why don’t you help your friend who is looking at a different way of making an income?  Your purchase from someone’s network marketing business could help them pay bills or pay for a long-over due vacation. I don’t know about you, but I feel pretty good about myself when I know I am helping a friend out.

Intro & Welcome

Hello and welcome to my little piece of the Internet!  My name is Danielle and I am an Independent Presenter with Younique.  With this blog, I hope to document my journey with Younique and reach out to other people out there who may be interested in Network Marketing.

My first exposure to Younique happened about two years ago. It seemed like everyone on my friends list on Facebook was raving about this new product called Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes.  One day I decided to try this mascara out. You see, I have barely there lashes naturally. I have contemplated getting extensions on my lashes but it seemed expensive and time-consuming. So I decided to give the fiber lashes a go to see if it worked. Since it seemed like everyone on Facebook was selling them, I just picked someone randomly and ordered off her website.

So I received the 3D Fiber Lashes in the mail and I had to try them out immediately.

It was pretty simple to apply. I didn’t wear a lot of makeup to begin with. I was a simple girl. Some tinted moisturizer, eye shadow, eye liner and mascara was my go-to routine for as long as I can remember.  And simple works for me. After all, I am a busy mom working full time. I sure didn’t want to waste precious time applying makeup!

I loved it! I was amazed at how easily it was to extend my lashes just with a few swipes of the gel & fibers.  I was sold on the product. My lashes looked fuller and thicker without having to change my daily makeup routine. To be honest, it was never my intention to become a presenter. I was content with being a consumer and supporting someone else’s business.   I had tried direct network marketing sales in the past, and they never worked out for me.  I just figured the network marketing business wasn’t for me.

On Facebook,  I would see people I knew joining the Younique brand-wagon.  And it really never occurred to me to sign up as a presenter. In fact, I hadn’t even tried any of the other products that Younique offered. I was perfectly content with the mascara and my current makeup routine.  One day, I spied an old friend had become a presenter. Granted, I saw lots of past friends sign up, but for some reason, this particular person stood out to me. So I contacted her and told her “omg I use this mascara and I love it.”  And we started chatting and rekindled a friendship lost from distance and time. In all of our conversations, there was never any pressure to sign up.

After a couple months (actually a year ago from now in March 2015), I decided to sign up as a presenter just to take advantage of the discounts and to score the products in the starter kit. My daughter was needing some makeup for her upcoming dance recital and I wanted to get her some good high quality makeup without breaking the bank.   After doing some research on these products, I found it was the following:

I do want to note that Younique is not certified cruelty-free.  However, Younique does not test products on animals. The company is in the process of exploring/procuring official certification as a cruelty-free company. However, Younique has not conducted an in-depth cruelty-free review tracing each ingredient back to such ingredient’s original source at this time.

So I became a kitnapper + hobbyist. I loved the products. My daughter loved the products. I bought what I wanted for personal use.  And there was never any pressure to do more than I wanted to do.  And I was content with that for a few months. I started to replace my tried-and-true products with Younique products little by little. I found that I was feeling more confident with my outward appearance as I started to play more with various cosmetic products.  Not only that, but when I signed up as a presenter, I became immersed in the world of Younique. Facebook groups, periscopes, Twitter, instagrams, snapchats. Then I realized people I actually knew  were successful at network marketing. I’m not talking about random strangers, but people I have known most of my life, that I grew up with.   So I figured if “so-and-so” can become a mascara millionaire, what’s stopping me?

On Younique’s 3rd birthday, something in my head just clicked. A light bulb perhaps and basically I heard myself say “you can do this too.”  I didn’t have to sit on the sidelines and watch.  Are you in a position where you are just watching everyone succeed?  Do you feel like you are just getting by?  Well, I’m here to tell you that you are more than enough. You can do anything you set your mind to. At that moment I decided to make Younique a priority instead of an option, my whole mindset changed.  No matter where you are in your journey, you need to know that you are capable.  This isn’t some far out unattainable dream. It is within your grasp. But the question remains:  are you willing to put the work into it?
